As we celebrate World Earth Day, it’s important to see how we can make a difference in our everyday lives to help the plant. In Dubai, just like in other cosmopolitan cities around the world, a lot of electricity is wasted on a daily basis. To do your part, we look at five easy ways you can save electricity in your Dubai property, helping you save the environment and some money along the way.
- Watch how much you use your lights
Turning on lights is obviously essential in the evenings, but you will be surprised at how often lights are turned on unnecessarily, or even left on when no one is in the room. Make sure you go round your house turning off lights you are not using, and ensure everything is turned off before you leave the house.
- Always turn your AC off when not needed
During the summer it’s almost unbearable to be inside without AC, but a lot of the time it is left on when people leave the house. Although it is a nice feeling to walk into a cool home, keeping your AC on all day long can waste huge amounts of electricity (and cost you money). Be sensible with your AC and be strict on yourself to turn it off when it’s not needed.
- Switch off appliances
When appliances are plugged in but not being used, they are still consuming electricity. Even though these are small amounts of electricity, they soon add up to large amounts. Make sure that you turn appliances off at the plug when you are not using them. This is especially important when you are travelling and not even in the home, as appliances such as microwaves, TVs or computer screens will be using electricity constantly.
- Turn off your water heater in the summer
As many of us know, during the summer months it’s impossible to get cold-water running through your taps. Everything is warm or even hot. One positive side to this is the fact that you can then turn off your water heater, as the water is already naturally hot enough to shower in. This will save a large amount of electricity over the two or three months during the summer.
- Use energy efficient light bulbs
Energy saving light bulbs last up to ten times more than your regular bulbs, so can be a great way of saving money and electricity. You also wont even notice the difference, with the majority of modern energy saving bulbs giving off exactly the same light as their counterparts.
These are just some of the ways that you can easily reduce the amount of electricity you use in your home. To help the global environment and improve sustainability in the UAE, try to use all of these pointers in your Dubai home, not just on World Earth Day, but all year round.
